West Women's Hockey League Severn Division Two: Gloucester City IV 2 Wotton-under-Edge 3

WOTTON overcame a 2-1 half-time deficit to complete a memorable comeback win away to Gloucester City last Saturday.

It was an evenly matched first half on a bitterly cold day but it was the home side who took the lead with a scrambled goal after Wotton had turned the ball over following a free hit in their 25.

The visitors rallied well and brought themselves level after a sweeping move, ending in a shot stopped by a City player’s body on the line. The umpire played an advantage rather than award a penalty stroke and it was Lianne Hoyle who reacted first by slotting the ball home.

Hoyle was awarded player of the match for another consummate performance at sweeper, particularly in the first half where her distribution and game management - along with that of Hayley Perrett - was outstanding. Ming Green also grew in confidence as the half went on, deputising at right back.

Wotton were again guilty of not clearing their lines and gave away another goal on the stroke of half-time.

On another day this might have been a killer blow but having surrendered a lead meekly the previous week, the Blues were determined not to make the same mistake again.

Myra Patterson added strength to the right flank in the second period and Heather Reid remained a constant headache for the City backline. This was complimented by the efforts of strike partners Lottie Aldridge and Maz Buist, both of whom continue to look comfortable at this level. It was Perrett who brought the Blues back on terms with a typically well struck penalty corner, and thereafter there looked to be only one team in it as Wotton pushed for the three points.

Reid made it 3-2 with ten minutes remaining and that’s how the game ended.

Wotton host Lansdown at Castle School this Saturday.
