ENGLAND head coach Stuart Lancaster praised former Dursley youth player Charlie Sharples after he scored two tries in England’s demolition of Fiji.

The Gloucester wing, starting in place of the suspended Chris Ashton, was unfortunate not to score a hat-trick in the 54-12 win at Twickeham and pressed his claims for a start against Australia next Saturday.

Ugo Monye on the opposite wing also bagged a try on his return to the England team and with Chris Ashton set to return to face Australia, Lancaster faces a welcome selection headache.

"Chris Ashton is back so there are selection decisions to be made. It's not a nightmare at all," Lancaster said.

"It's a great position to be in. Charlie did what we wanted him to. He was excellent in every area.”

While Dursley celebrated Sharples’ achievements of becoming the first player to come through their youth ranks and score an international try for the senior England side, it was also a monumental day for the town of Thornbury.

Mako Vunipola became the first person to come from The Castle School and Thornbury Broncos Youth Rugby Club to earn a senior England cap when he came on as a replacement early in the second half.

Sharples scored his first try when he evaded four tackles to stretch over in the corner, shortly after a Toby Flood penalty gave England the lead.

Three more England tries followed before Sharples doubled his tally in the second half when he stepped inside from Flood’s long pass to go down in the corner again.
