Gloucestershire County League: Taverners 0 Thornbury Town 1

First published in Thornbury Sport

THORNBURY TOWN recovered from the defeat against DRG Frenchay to record an important and deserved win at Taverners.

With Thorns missing a number of regulars it was Taverners who had the best of the opening exchanges and they spurned two good chances in the opening five minutes. Their leading scorer Matt Spring found himself in two one on one situation, but his first effort shot struck the upright and his second was blasted over the bar.

Town began to play themselves back into the game and after ten minutes Danny Thompson combined well with Steve Thompson from a corner before he drove his shot narrowly over the bar. Michael Thornton went close with a header from a corner for the hosts but it was Thorns who took the lead in the 21st minute following a good run by Brad Andrews into the Taverners penalty area. Although he was dispossessed the clearance fell to Danny Thompson, who took a couple of paces before unleashing an unstoppable shot from 25 yards out.

Right on half time Thornbury had a great chance to double their lead but neither Danny Thompson or Nathan Irwin could get on the end of a Mark Greenland cross.

The second half was a fairly dour affair but Thorns could have increased their lead early on when Irwin’s header from a corner was straight at goalkeeper Duane Portlock. Danny Thompson then had a good opportunity, having been set up by brother Steve, but Portlock saved easily and was then at full stretch to keep out a Greenland effort.

Thorns were able to see out the game without problems to maintain their climb towards the middle of the table.

They are without a game this Saturday, whilst the Reserves, who recorded a 3-2 win at Cam Bulldogs in Stroud League Division Three, face the short trip to Berkeley Town Reserves.
