IT appears as though chairman Nick Higgs is sticking with Mark McGhee, despite increasing pressure from fans to make a change after another disappointing defeat.

None of us wants to continue the cycle of hiring and firing managers, but the club is in a precarious position in the relegation zone, second from bottom of League Two, and action is needed.

It was only thanks to Barnet not winning on Saturday that we are not propping up the entire league.

We are at a pivotal moment in our history, with the prospect of moving to a brand new, purpose-built all-seater stadium closer than ever before. There are fears that dropping to the Conference could jeopardise those plans, given the likely drop in revenue and support that would result in the ultimate fall from grace.

Higgs is resisting the temptation to pull the trigger but the team’s lame performance against Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday offered little hope that things would improve.

It also reinforced fans’ views that McGhee is failing to motivate the team.

When the Daggers took the lead we never looked like having the creative spark or impetus to get back in the game and the solitary goal was all they needed to secure three points.

You would expect a reaction from the players after the debacle at Wycombe the previous week – attributes such as bite in the tackle, controlled aggression and a fierce desire to win. Instead they appeared to be going through the motions and putting in the minimum effort required.

McGhee seems to watch a different game to everyone else as he continually lauds the players’ efforts and insists they played well. It was refreshing to see Broghammer on the left but playing Parkes in midfield was another bizarre selection from a manager who has a peculiar penchant for putting square pegs in round holes.

The manager has tinkered with the squad too often as he failed to recruit the players needed in the summer and we are now paying the price.

We can only hope that Higgs’ desire to give McGhee more time proves to be right and a win at York on Saturday would help to restore fans’ faith.
