ON SATURDAY I travelled up to Blackburn to watch City play Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup.

To be honest it was a trip more in hope of a result than expectation. Since sacking Henning Berg just after Christmas Blackburn had won two games on the trot scoring six goals in the process. With our leaky defence we were destined to struggle at the former Premier League club’s Ewood Park stadium, of which I was visiting for the first time.

It was another very disappointing display by City. We went behind early on to a Danny Murphy strike and never recovered. Missing Albert Adomah to the African Cup of Nations, we looked hopelessly short on creativity. What was maybe most disappointing was what seemed to be a lack of commitment and fight shown by the players.

At the final whistle City players Skuse and Carey came over to applaud the travelling support. The performance had been met by boos from the travelling fans. Showing my frustration at the performance I was surprised to be called over by Skuse and we had a short, frank discussion about the performance. In my time watching City it has been unprecedented for a player (the captain in this case) to do this.

I said that I felt there was a lack of commitment from the players and Skuse disputed this and was adamant that the group of players at the club were honest and putting in 100% effort. He admitted that the performance at Blackburn wasn’t good enough and apologised, but maintained it wasn’t through lack of trying.

I have nothing but respect for Skuse for coming over and having a chat in what could have been a hostile situation for him. He clearly cares deeply about the club, being a keen supporter in his early years. To be honest my frustration was not with him, more manager McInnes and some of the other players. But fair play to him for admitting that the performance was poor and apologising, as a travelling fan you can’t really ask for much more than that. I just hope that the players and manager can right this wrong on Saturday against high-flying Leicester City at Ashton Gate (3pm).
