ROVERS fans enjoyed a night to remember as they sealed their third win in a row against Barnet last Friday in dramatic style.

A last-gasp strike to clinch victory in injury time in front of over 8,500 delirious fans will live long in the memory.

Gasheads will hope we can reminisce fondly about an incredible night of great excitement at the end of the season, having successfully fought off the threat of relegation.

The hard-fought 2-1 win lifted us up to 19th place but we must not be complacent as there is still a long way to go, despite the resurgence we have enjoyed under the astute guidance of John Ward.

However, Gasheads are much more optimistic that next season will see another campaign in League Two after watching another impressive, committed performance.

The never-say-die spirit was encapsulated by our two late goals as Rovers battled hard throughout and never let their heads drop.

Barnet more than played their part in an absorbing contest, marshalled by their player-manager Edgar Davids, the former Dutch international.

It looked like they had had the Dutch footballing principles instilled in them as they passed the ball confidently and enjoyed a great share of possession.

Luckily they lacked an end product and when Broghammer finished neatly in the 78th minute an electric atmosphere turned up another notch as fans sensed a vital three points were within our grasp.

When the Bees equalised a minute before time our hearts sank but in truth we could not begrudge them a point.

But Brunt, making his home debut, had other ideas as he smashed the ball into the roof of the net with barely a minute left on the clock to endear himself to the Memorial Stadium faithful.

Rovers’ battling qualities were again in evidence at Cheltenham on Tuesday night as the Pirates returned with an excellent point following a 1-1 draw.

A goal of the season contender by Norburn in injury time gave the Gas a share of the spoils and again showed the players’ refusal to be defeated.

Three points at Oxford on Saturday would continue our fine run and move us another step closer to safety.
