West Women’s Hockey League

Berkeley Division One

Thornbury 2 Redland UWE 2nds 1

THORNBURY deservedly won this rearranged league game by a narrow margin.

Despite having a massive territorial advantage in the opening half, the home side were unable to score as the numerous opportunities created came to nothing and it was 0-0 at the break.

Charlotte Fox and Tracey Jones were dangerous attackers for Thornbury and the returning Sian Fuller and Vicki Ball saw a number of shots shave the posts or saved by the keeper.

Amanda McGarry made a number of timely interceptions for her side and Katie Bridgeman, before retiring injured, probed intelligently, linking well with the Beurschgens family.

Rachael Gardner, who was all over the pitch for the home side, at last gave Thornbury the lead when she hammered home following a penalty corner.

The lead was extended when Jones showed her experience by being in the correct position to guide a cross by Charlotte Fox past the visiting keeper.

The visitors managed to reduce the deficit with minutes remaining and might easily have equalised with the last play, but the shot from a penalty corner scraped the outside of the post .

Thornbury seconds' friendly with Bristol was called off so all three Thornbury sides have a break from hockey action until the New Year.
