Ellwood 1 Thornbury Town 3

THORNBURY travelled back from the Forest of Dean with a deserved three points following three great strikes in a competitive fixture.

Town started brightly and had a goal disallowed in the fifth minute after Rob Wilks' header was ruled out for a foul on the keeper.

Thorns dominated the early stages although Ellwood always looked dangerous on the break. Midway through the half Ben McKenna’s shot across the face of goal went narrowly wide of the far post whilst minutes later Danny Haines' cross from the left was met by a perfect header from Josh Pirie but the home keeper pulled off a full length save to tip the ball round the post.

However, it was Ellwood who took the lead in the 31st minute when Darryl Addiss was given too much space in the area and slotted the ball past Alex Lippiatt. Their lead did not last long, Haines equalising with a shot from the edge of the area that took a faint deflection and gave the keeper no chance.

Town then took a deserved lead two minutes before the break after Joe Guest was brought down just outside the penalty area. Rob Wilks curled his free kick round the wall and into the corner of the net, again giving the keeper no chance.

The second half saw Ellwood take the game to Thorns and they enjoyed long spells of pressure but a combination of good defending and wayward finishing kept the lead intact.

With 15 minutes remaining Lippiatt spilled a cross with the home forwards claiming the ball had crossed the line, but the referee's assistant was perfectly placed and waved play on.

Thorns had had their chances too with Danny Thompson, Luke Franklin and Danny Haines all going close.

However, with just three minutes left, Thorns finally killed the game off when Craig Lancastle set up Danny Thompson 20 yards out and he lashed his shot into the roof of the net before the keeper could move.

Town face a difficult task this Saturday when unbeaten Chipping Sodbury are the visitors to the Mundy Fields, 3pm.
