FORMER Castle School pupil and Thornbury resident Dan Wide led the England Student fencing team to victory in the Student Five Nations, held at the University of Ulster.

Wide had been in charge of selecting the 18-strong team, sorting out the accommodation and kit as well as fencing in the men's sabre team.

He fought in matches against Ireland and Scotland, passing undefeated and helping England to 45-19 and 45-32 victories respectively.

Wide also made sure he was available to encourage and support the other teams.

“He really was everywhere – a really good supporter,” said team-mate Tom Allen.

"It was a nice way to end the year” said Wide.

“My fencing has come along a lot in the last couple of months after a rocky start to the season so it's nice to top the year off with an opportunity to fence for my country.”

England ended up winning four out of the six available weapons to triumph in the competition for the seventh year in a row.
