A LARGE team of gymnasts represented The Ridge School, Yate, at this year’s South West Schools Acrobatic Championships and came back with a large haul of medals.

A total of 24 pupils from our school travelled to Sherborne, Dorset, to compete in the Under-11 section of the competition.

The pupils competed together in teams of six, performing agilities and balance elements to music.

Four teams were entered to allow the number of pupils who wanted to have a go at the competition this year. Some pupils also competed in the Girls pairs, Boys pairs and Mixed pairs category.

The gymnasts had to make a very early start on Sunday. The gymnasts have been training during their lunch breaks and after school, in preparation for the competition.

For some of the children this was their first experience of competition and a mixture of nerves and excitement buzzed around the school on the run up to the event. I was so pleased that they all performed so well and that none of them made any mistakes. I think they all left the competition having had an enjoyable and memorable experience.

"I couldn’t be more proud of our gymnasts," said Mrs Mewse, who coaches the children at The Ridge. "They were absolutely brilliant."
