MID-TABLE will not be good enough for Thornbury Town after tremendous exploits of last season in both the Gloucestershire County league and cup, says manager Andy Davies.

Town have ‘raised their standards’ after delivering a top four finish in the league and winning the Les James County Cup against the odds in May.

Now, says Davies, the club have to continue the momentum and ensure they enjoy even more success when the new season kicks-off in two months time.

The Thorns will be holding their annual general meeting at the Mundy Pavilion on June 8 with a 7.30pm start where the glory of ending the league campaign in fourth and beating new champions Cheltenham Civil Service 1-0 to secure the cup will doubtless be celebrated.

But Davies has insisted they have to resist the temptation to wrest on their laurels and ensure it is not a case of after the After the Lord Mayor’s Show when they get back to business.

Town have lined-up two friendlies – both away – on July 23 at Almondsbury and August 3 against Bittonl, both with 7.30pm starts, at the moment but are looking to get other games organised at the Mundy Playing Fields.

The squad have been taking time out from football since the cup victory on May 10 at Slimbridge’s Wisloe Road but come next month, they will be back into training.

Davies said: “I have not seen much of them since the cup final. They have gone off now after ending on a bit of a high.

“But the problems is they have set the bar higher and raised standards so we need to be in the top three next season. We need to push on from here and I hope we will be challenging right up there.”

Thornbury lost just one of their last nine games in all competitions last season which was a 2-1 home defeat to Henbury.

Among that run of wins, though, were victories over Gala Wilton and Kings Stanley, two sides which finished the season just one win from overtaking Thornbury’s fourth place in the division.

Davies said they have to kick-on, adding: “We need to move forward and so we need to be up there challenging. We don’t want to be a mid-table team.

“They took points off the big sides last season and so there is no reason why they cannot be there or thereabouts because the confidence in the squad is sky high now.”
