WICKETKEEPER John Rendell finished with a rare ‘six-for’ as Chipping Sodbury produced a tremendous team display to thump high-flying Cheltenham Civil Service by 97 runs in the West of England Premier League’s Gloucester Division.
The gloveman began the day with 39 at the top of the order with Dan Wright hitting 63 as all ten Sodbury batsmen who made it out to the middle reached double figures in a total of 251-9 against the Civil Service attack.
And Rendell’s peerless work behind the stumps then helped Sodbury bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing display.
Rendall held onto two catches and claimed four stumpings as the home side were rushed out for 154.
Jay Penfold returned to the side and finished with 4-32 while Jamie Rendell (3-35 from ten) and Nick Wake (2-35) also made their mark.
It was a great day too for Sodbury seconds who held off Winsley by six runs in a high scoring encounter at the Ridings.
Skipper Jerry Swatton’s 89 and then an unbeaten 97 by Jack Philpott saw Sodbury pile up 309-5. But it was only just enough as Winsley’s last man was caught on the boundary off the last ball, going for the six that would have tied an incredible tussle.
Callum Davidge (3-51), Lee Walters (3-45), Will Christofi (2-5) and Darren Bell (2-55) shared the wickets.
Sodbury thirds were edged out by three wickets at Carsons Mangotsfield in Division Three of the Bristol and District League.
Damien Frodsham (34) top scored in the visitors’ 141 all out before Carsons overcame a mid-order collapse to secure the win.
Sodbury fourths were without a fixture when scheduled opponents Carsons seconds could not raise a side.
But the fifths welcomed the chance to play at The Ridings and responded with a five-wicket win against United Banks 2nds in Division Nine.
Sodbury, captained by Rosie Tregear – the first time in the club’s history that a woman has led a senior team – restricted Banks to 204-5.
And Jack Townsend’s unbeaten 92, assisted by 46 from Mark Graham – who played alongside son Peter and daughter Alice – nailed down the win.
Sodbury’s super form continued on Sunday with a five-wicket win at Chalford in the Village League which featured a tremendous display from in-form Jack Philpott.
The all-rounder, fresh from his exploits the previous day, claimed 5-38 from seven as Chalford were pegged back to 229-9.
And he followed up with 103 at the top of the order to clinch the win with more than three overs to spare.
