Frampton Cottrell Thirds 95-7 beat Thornbury Fourths 94 by three wickets

THORNBURY fourths survival hopes were dealt a blow as  Frampton Cottrell thirds edged to a three-wicket victory.
Thorns were bolstered by the inclusion of the talented Jon Martin and third-team brothers, Simon and Andy Weeks.
Skipper Derek Davis lost a key toss and was asked to bat first.
On a damp and uncovered wicket, Thornbury’s openers Andy Harbridge and Simon Weeks started cautiously as they battled the unreliable surface.
Weeks (6) fell in the fifth over and was followed an over later as Jon Martin (one) got a beauty through the gate.
Runs were hard to come by but, in truth, Thornbury’s innings never got going even with Andy Harbridge anchoring the innings with a patient 43.
Davis (8) was next highest scorer as Thornbury were skittled for just  94 inside 39 overs.
With so few runs to play with, young Rhys Price had John Hughes LBW before Greg Messerpicked up Lee Mollinson (10) and Paul Cater (13) to reduce the Fram to
17-3.
Frampton’s Trevor Walding and Tim Woods  batted for the next 18 overs and very slowly inched towards their target until Andy Weeks removed Woods (12) with the score at 49-4 off 24 overs.
He quickly took another followed by Price removing Lawrence Chidley (5) in his second spell.
Davis then removed the dangerous Walding for 23 as the Fram limped to 61-7 with nine overs left and 34 runs required.
Frampton realised survival was not going to win the match and new batsman Victor Cater went on the offensive taking 12 off one over from the skipper, with Weeks receiving similar punishment as Frampton reached their target in the 38th over.
With a few more runs the outcome could have been different but praise must be heaped on the young bowlers Alex Foulner (0-12 off six), Messer (2-19 off five) and in particularly Price for his 2-11 off 10 overs.
