SQUASH Bristol & District League Premier B

Vivo Sports III 7

Thornbury A 14

THORNBURY A, who had already secured promotion to the Bristol squash Premier A division, had the final task of winning the league title by beating Vivo Sports III.

This proved to be less straightforward than in recent weeks as the in form Callum Davidson suffered a 3-0 loss while Ewan Smith was beaten 3-1.

The rest of the Thornbury side managed to get the team over the line, however, with 3-0 wins for both Ryan Wilson and Sam Davidson, and a 3-1 win for Brad Jenkins.

It meant Thornbury came away with a 14-7 victory and the league title.

The champions started the season with back-to-back defeats, but stormed to the summit in emphatic fashion with eight consecutive wins.

Division One

Bath University II 19

Thornbury B 3

THORNBURY B lost all the matches in their final game of the season away at Bath University.

The result was largely irrelevant as the team was secure in mid-table, however.

With no chance of promotion and no threat of relegation, the dead rubber fixture was a one-sided affair.

Alex McMillan lost 3-2, Rob Livingstone lost 3-1, while Justin Edwards and Chris Hutchence suffered 3-0 defeats.

A no-show in the fifth meant another 3-0 win for the hosts, sealing a sizeable victory over Thornbury.

The B team finished the season in fourth place, but ended the league campaign poorly after such a bright start.

Division Two

Shepton Mallet B 13

Thornbury C 8

A SURPRISE defeat was dealt to Thornbury C away at Shepton Mallett, with the struggling home side winning 13-8 on Wednesday, December 9.

The visitors only came away with 3-0 wins for Ian Talbot and Pete Bowen.

Dale Curtis suffered a 3-0 defeat, while Nigel Tovey and Ian Johnson lost 3-1 in their respective matches.

The shock result was Shepton Mallet's first win in six, and was Thornbury's fourth defeat in five.

The visitors' form dwindled at the tail end of the season after a bright start, and despite a respectable third place finish, Thornbury were a considerable distance adrift of the top two sides in the league.

Division Five

Thornbury D 15

Bristol University IIII 0

THORNBURY were granted a default 15-0 win against winless University of Bristol after the bottom-of-the-table visitors failed to field a side.

Nick Clifton, Colin Preece, Mick Dixon, Bill Ellis and James Jenkins were given 3-0 wins for the in-form Thornbury who are fourth in the table with one game to play.

Coming off the back of three consecutive wins in the division, the D team are next scheduled to travel to Bristol for the reverse fixture.

Thornbury will be desperate for a win to pip third-place Keynsham A in the table.
