THORNBURY Hockey Club held a successful 50th celebration dinner recently at The Bristol Golf Club.

Nearly 100 past and present players and supporters attended the event organised by secretary Angela Greenslade and chairman Sara Newman.

Two awards were presented on the evening, popular first team captain Jen Arnold received the Margaret Jackson shield, whilst club umpire David Parry-Jones was awarded the Bill Crawford Cup.

The other club awards were presented at the club’s Annual Meeting last week.

Chair Sara Newman mentioned that the club first team would again play in Berkeley Two next season and the seconds continue in Berkeley Three along with some new teams.

Long-serving Greenslade was elected club President following the death of Pat Crawford during the season.

She will also continue in her secretarial role and continue to play and guide the clubs promising youngsters in the league matches.

The first team awards for last season were: Captains award Liz Jenkins, Player of the season Alex Arnold, top goal scorer Poppy Woolnough, Most improved player Laura Hayward and highly commended Lucy Woodruff.

Megan Allen was awarded the second team captains award with Megan McLachlan Player of the season.

Molly Smith gained the most improved award and Hannah Williams and Emma Matthews were highly commended.

The top goal scorers were Lauren Upham and Megan McLachlan. Amy Bowman received a special own goal scorers award from the second team.

Retiring chairman Sara Newman presented coach Max Longden with a Special Chairman’s Award.

For the 2016/17 season, Jen Arnold will continue as first team captain with Liz Jenkins acting as vice captain.

Sarah Brealey and Lauren Upham continue to be responsible for the second team. Amanda McGarry is the new club captain with Elaine Dreyton continuing as Child Welfare Officer.
