Broadwell Amateurs 0 Thornbury Town 1

THORNBURY Town made it three wins out of four this season in the Gloucestershire County League after an excellent victory by a single goal away at Broadwell Amateurs on Saturday.

The torrential downpours of Saturday made it a wet and windy afternoon but Thornbury returned from the Forest of Dean with a well deserved three points.

Hosts Broadwell, who had won five of their first six games so far this season, were restricted to a few speculative efforts as the Thorns defence were rarely troubled throughout the ninety minutes.

Town, with the wind behind them, totally controlled the first-half but struggled to create any clear cut chances.

Midway through the half, a Danny Haines free kick wide of the far post whilst a couple of minutes later he picked up a Broadwell clearance but shot too high.

Meanwhile, Tom Webb was causing all sorts of problems for the host’s full back, and five minutes before the break, his teasing cross-cum-shot landed on the roof of the net with Merry in the Broadwell goal struggling to reach it.

In the last couple of minutes of the half, a Marcus Wormwell cross was met by Danny Thompson but his looping header went over the bar and moments later Wormwell turned Keetch in the penalty area but Merry was quick off his line to save at the youngster’s feet.

With the wind in their favour after the break, Broadwell were more of an attacking threat and, in the 50th minute, Burnard drove wide when well placed.

Thorns were still enjoying a lot of possession in midfield and a long range effort from Luke Franklin brought a full length save from Merry, whilst, moments later, Toby Bennett’s on target effort was deflected wide for a corner.

Broadwell had their chances, and on the hour mark, Pete Fowler came to Thornbury Town's rescue when he blocked Latham’s close range shot in the danger zone.

Town were getting some joy with long range efforts and Franklin again had Merry at full stretch but despite fumbling the save, Thornbury could not follow up and convert the shot into a goal.

With ten minutes left in the match, Broadwell almost took the lead but Alex Lippiatt pulled off a good save from Fitt, with Joe Guest completing the clearance to clear the ball away from danger.

Finally the breakthrough came as Thornbury secured the three points that their disciplined display deserved.

Five minutes from time, another Tom Webb run down the left saw him play the ball into Wormwell whose shot from just inside the penalty area carried too much power for Merry.

Thorns will be looking to repeat this performance on Saturday when they entertain Southmead CS Athletic at the Mundys, kick off 3pm.

Meanwhile, back home, the reserves had a 6-1 win against Division Two side Tuffley Rovers in the Stroud Charity Cup.
