IT was a shame that, after months of effort, the final matches of the cricket season for the senior sides were washed out on Saturday.

Nevertheless, it has been a great season for Rockhampton and Thornbury in the West of England Premier League Prem Two Glos/Wilts division.

The Rams finished in third place, just five points off second-placed Cheltenham. They were due to play new champions Lechlade, who won the title with 252 points from their 18 matches, at The Boundary Field on Saturday but the covers did not come off.

And it was the same story for Thornbury, who ended a season where they were almost doomed to relegation, laying as they were rock bottom of the table in mid-season, by rallying and finishing in sixth place.

They were due to take on Gloucester City Winget on Saturday but The Ship Field would have been more use to a sea vessel than a cricket ball.

Remarkably, however, some cricket did take place.

In the West of England Premier League’s Gloucestershire division, Chipping Sodbury got underway at Dumbleton.

They were put into bat and made 152-2 from 27.3 overs before the match was abandoned.

Opener Dan Wright fell for 14 and number four and wicketkeeper John Rendell made 26 not out.

But the mainstay of the Sodbury innings was Tom Nightingale who hit an unbeaten 92 in his side’s total.

And Rockhampton’s second string managed to get their game on as they travelled to Gloucester City Winget seconds in the Gloucestershire County League Division Three but lost out to the home side by seven wickets.

Rockhampton were put in by the home side, with opener Jeremy White hitting 44, number five Dan Pirie adding 36 and Sam Long, at number seven, hitting an unbeaten twenty in their side’s total of 161-6 from 25 overs.

But Gloucester City Winget dug into the reply, with Lloyd Harrington top scoring on 62, to reach 165-3 in 24 overs.

Rockhampton’s Sam and David Long plus Harry Collins took a wicket each for their team.

The last day defeat, however, saw the Rams finish the season in fifth place.

Thornbury’s third team, meanwhile, tried to get underway but it did not last long.

They travelled to Bristol and District League ninth division table toppers Hambrook seconds but the rain intervened and only 6.2 overs were possible with Thornbury reaching 35-1 when it was all over.
