CHAMPAGNE corks have again been popping at Hambrook Cricket Club following another successful season.

The first XI have been promoted for the second year running as the Bristol and District League Division One runners-up.

In a nip-and-tuck end to the season, a tied penultimate game saw Hambrook pipped to the post by Nailsea who won the division by just three runs.

What should have been the last day division title decider against Nailsea, fell victim to the weather.

Skipper Lee Dyer said: “We set ourselves a target of finishing top half of the table.

“We managed to lose three games early doors and tied two others which proved to be costly in the end.

“What has been pleasing is seeing our younger players coming through and making valuable contributions.

“Our overseas player, New Zealander Tyler Johansson, certainly proved to be quite a handful with his express pace.”

Not to be outdone their second XI have also been promoted as Division Nine runners-up.

For much of the season, Hambrook were the division trailblazers but when the last match of the season was washed out, it was Whitchurch who pulled ahead having managed to avoid the rain long enough to claim the points needed.

Hambrook’s third team, which featured a number of youth players, finished a credible third place in Division 13.

The club have also have their hands on a third piece of silverware with their Sunday XI winning Division One of the Village League.

Club chairman Martin Dyer said: “I guess the whole club is only just coming to terms on what may well be the most successful two seasons the club has ever had.

“The whole club is now buzzing. This year has gone by in a flash.”
