Thornbury Town 2 Southmead Ath 1

THORNBURY Town finally broke down a resilient Southmead defence to win the game in the dying minutes.

Thornbury started well and had the visitors on the back foot from the kick off but it was Southmead who scored first in the eighth minute.

A Town attack broke down and a long ball over the top of the home defence found Rob Sivers out wide and his angled left foot shot found the corner of the net.

Town gradually recovered from the setback and midway through the half they scored a deserved equaliser, when Danny Thompson’s cross from the right was headed home by Marcus Wormwell at the far post giving the visitors keeper Cook no chance.

On the half hour, Luke Franklin’s long range effort went narrowly wide whilst five minutes later, Danny Thompson’s powerful volley rattled the crossbar.

Thorns almost grabbed the lead right on half-time when Franklin outpaced Painter but Cook was able to save at his feet.

The second half saw Thorns again dominate possession but with the visitors always dangerous on the break.

Town had gone close with a couple of efforts from Thompson and Franklin, but a speculative shot from Senior came close to giving the visitors the lead once more, the ball drifting just wide of the far post.

Nathan Irwin had a great chance to put Town in front, but miscued his shot from Scott McLeod’s cross, but a couple of minutes later had the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out for offside.

With just three minutes left, Thorns took the lead when a cross from Tom Webb was met with a first time shot from Mark Viner which gave Cook no chance.

In stoppage time, Thorns were awarded a penalty when Irwin was brought down but Tom Webb’s spot kick was saved by Cook.

A deserved but hard-earned three points for Thornbury which lifts them to third in the table.

This Saturday they visit new boys Lebeq United at the GFA Headquarters, kick off 1pm.
