OVER fifty pairs of senior golfers from nearly twenty clubs gathered at Thornbury Golf Centre for the annual Mixed Open event.

Soon after midday and before some had even started their round, play had to be suspended for seventy minutes as lightening flashed overhead.

The course, which had been prepared in excellent condition, stood up well to the deluge.

Despite the delay and disruption, when play eventually got going, the scoring in the Better Ball competition was of the highest standard with only two points separating the top seven pairs.

The winners from Rodway Hill GC with 46 points were Lyndall and Hamish McLean and they were closely followed by Susan Johns (Kendleshire) and Eric Millard (Chipping Sodbury) on 45 points.

Countback was then needed to determine third to sixth place as Pamela and Michael Sherwood (Sherdons and Tewkesbury Park), Prue Taylour (Thornbury) and Terry Rapple (Drayton Park), Suzy Unwin (Thornbury) and Peter Smith (Tall Pines) and Virginia and Ian Suttle (Mendip Spring) all had with 44 points.

In making the presentation to the winners, captain Graham Smith thanked everyone for their support and patience and also Brian McCarthy and his team for their efficient organisation of the day.
