FORMER Bristol ace Matthew Morgan is backing his old side can pull themselves out of the Aviva Premiership relegation zone and save themselves this season.

Bristol turn their attention to the Anglo-Welsh Cup this weekend when they travel across the Severn Bridge for the second time in a week to face Ospreys.

But Morgan, who played 25 times for Bristol and scored 165 points in two seasons with them before moving to Cardiff Blues last year, thinks they can escape the trap door where they are currently battling with Worcester Warriors.

Bristol are currently one point away from the Warriors after securing their first two victories of the league season over the Christmas and New Year period, one of which was against Worcester on Boxing Day.

Morgan, who starred against his former club in helping the Blues to a 37-21 European Challenge Cup victory last Saturday at the Arms Park, said: “I think, at the start of the season, they (Bristol) had a couple of losses but they have stuck to it.

“They have been tight as a squad and I know people have come and gone, but I think Taints (head coach Mark Tainton) is doing a good job.

“It’s good to see them getting a few wins and I hope they stay up for the club and the city. The Premiership is a tough league and there are no easy games.

“But they have been doing well and they can stay up if they stick to what they are doing.”
