CONSISTENCY has been Thornbury RFC’s biggest headache this season as the club go into the business end of their Tribute South West One West season in the coming weeks.

But it is not consistency of results but rather that of players taking to the field, with head coach Rob Higgitt saying there is a different side picked every week.

Higgitt’s side are at home to tough Matson on Saturday as they look to close the gap at the top of the table on second-placed Clevedon.

And the head coach said: “We are trying to get our level of performance up to where it should be.

“We have had a lot of head injures and people missing two or three games at a time.

“And in the backs, over the course of the last six games, we have had a different number ten for each game.

“It’s difficult to keep chopping and changing these key positions. We have had a lot of backs injuries this season although it’s probably par for the course.”

However, with third-placed Thornbury still in the hunt for the second spot in the league this season, as Weston-super-Mare, who are on a 16-match unbeaten run this year, look almost certain champions, Higgitt says his side have worked hard to overcome the hurdles that have been presented to them.

“It is testament to the guys that they have dug in and battled through the trials,” added the coach.

“The league is a good league in a sense that, if we take our eye off our performance, we can lose.”

As for Matson this weekend, the coach said: “They are pretty strong all around and have won a couple of close games.”
