THIRTY four members of the Thornbury Golf Club Seniors Section travelled with captain Henry Campbell to Devon last week for their Annual Tour.

In often cool and windy conditions they encountered three very different and challenging courses.

Arriving at Bovey Castle on the first day Teams set out for a Bowmaker competition. Jeff Stott, Colin Mealing, Peter Maggs and Peter Dawes negotiated the holes alongside the twisting River Bovey better than most and ran out winners with 87 points.

A complete change of scenery on day two took us to the coastal cliffs above Bigbury where the strong easterly breeze was a definite factor. Jeff Pullin and Barry King triumphed here with an aggregate pairs score of 68 points.

With the individual scores from all three days counting for the Tour Championship the players set out in reverse order to tackle the Championship Course at Dartmouth in an individual Stableford with prizes in three Divisions.

With their Captain having had to return home when leading after two days, ten players started within five points of each other so as expected the result was in doubt until the last group completed the final hole.

Only then did it become clear that with 33 points to win Division One, Alan Cadman had overtaken several others to claim the overall title.

His aggregate 93 points was just one ahead of runner-up Lindsey Henniker-Heaton. The high round of the last day went to Roger Unwin in Division Two with 35 points whilst 29 from Ray Lemin secured him the Division Three prize.

After vice-captain John Warren had presented him with the Championship prizes and coveted “Green Jacket” Alan Cadman thanked John and all those who had worked so hard to ensure such an enjoyable three days.
