Two Wood Semi Finals
THE County Two Wood Semi Finals held at Wotton under Edge Bowls Club saw John Smallwood (Olveston) reach the final for the second year running in beating Nick Charlwood (Cheltenham) whilst Russ Mellerup (Cam Mills) overcame Jon Ellis (Falcon).
Smallwood after the first five ends found himself 5-2 down before coming back with a double.
Charlwood then won the next two ends to go 7-4 ahead. A purple patch then followed for Smallwood who picked up three consecutive two’s and after dropping a single shot won the next three ends to lead 13-8. Despite losing a two, a two and then a single on the 19th end secured the title for Smallwood 16-11.
In the other semi final Russ Mellerup strode into a five-nil lead after three ends and then saw Ellis strike back with consecutive doubles to close the gap to a single shot 6-5.
Mellerup struck back with three winning ends that yielded five shots and then despite dropping a single powered away with a run of three two’s and two singles to reach the Final with a handsome 19-8 win.
Both winners will now take their place in the County final to be held on Sunday 3 September at Moreton in Marsh and in August at the National Championships at Leamington.
