THORNBURY Olympian Sally Conway is set to take on the rest of the world tomorrow in a bid to claim her first judo world championship medal.

Conway, 30, who claimed a triumphant Olympic bronze medal in Rio last year, claimed silver in the -70kg category at the Cancun Grand Prix and Bucharest European Open in the spring, having taken several months out at the start of the season.

In Cancun, she showed her ability by beating the current world number 1, Venezuelan Elvismar Rodriguez, and hopes to transfer that success into her first bout on Friday against Elisavet Teltsidou from Greece.

As well as competing in her usual weight class at the world championships in Budapest, Conway will also fight alongside her countrymen on Sunday with the team events, new to the calendar ahead of Tokyo 2020.

Speaking to the Gazette before she left the country on Tuesday, Conway said that she was “all set” for the tournament.

“Preparation has been good,” she said. “I have been out to Germany, The Netherlands and Spain on training camp and am feeling in good shape.

“I am really looking forward to getting stuck in on Friday.”
