Les James League Cup first round

Henbury 1 Thornbury Town 3

THORNBURY Town knocked out Henbury from this year's Les James League Cup at the first round stage although the home side will be ruing the chances they had to in the first-half that would probably have given them passage into the next round.

As it turned out, Thornbury won the game 3-1. Andy Dickinson found himself clear on goal with just the keeper to beat on ten minutes but shot wide.

Thornbury had the ball in the Henbury net on the half-hour but it was ruled out for a foul by scorer Craig Lancastle.

After 35 minutes, Henbury’s Dan Dodimead also had a great chance to score but he shot wide of the target as well.

However, the home side did take the lead in the 44th minute from an Adam Rosser free kick that was completely misjudged by the Thornbury keeper and Jack Bebbington was left to head the ball into an empty net.

It took the visitor just a minute to level the score when Brandon Benjamin broke clear to send the ball past keeper Lewis Carr.

Then, in time added at the end of the first-half, Carr brought off a great save to deny Benjamin getting a second.

Thornbury took the lead on sixty minutes when the Henbury wall all jumped from a Toby Bennett free kick.

However, the ball went under the wall and past the stranded Carr.

Town made the game safe just five minutes later from a break down the right and Benjamin swept home the resulting cross.
