Thornbury Town 4 Rockleaze Rangers 2

DESPITE not being at their best, Thornbury Town recorded another win at the Mundys Playing Field on Saturday.

However they had the worst possible of starts went they went a goal  down in the fourth minute when, after losing possession in midfield, a curling cross from the left by Rangers Nathan Blackie saw Bowyer lunge towards the ball right in front of goal.

But he failed to get a touch and it drifted into the net at the far post. The visitors almost doubled their lead on 8 minutes when Bowyer’s header went wide of the post.

Thorns gradually played their way back into the game and a wicked cross from Tom Webb saw Ford turn the danger just wide of the post for a corner.

Town grabbed the equaliser midway through the half when Scott McLeod and Craig Lancastle linked up well to set up Marcus Wormwell who curled his shot round the Rockleaze keeper Newman and into the far corner of the net.

Wormwell nearly doubled his tally but his shot from distance was narrowly wide of the target.

Ten minutes before the break Thorns took the lead when Tom Webb’s weaving run took him past two defenders before steering his shot past Newman.

A couple of minutes later Toby Bennett’s shot from distance also went just wide of the post. Town could have extended their lead just before the break when Joe Guest’s header fell to Lancastle but their leading scorer delayed his shot and the danger was cleared.

Thorns were made to pay in the last seconds of the half when Rangers broke down the left and Hannan’s cross into the box found Carl Lakey in space and he was able to lob the ball over the head of Town keeper Tom Sheppard to level the score.

It took Thorns only 2 minutes into the second half to retake the lead when a mix up in the visitors defence saw the ball fall to Craig Lancastle and the striker laid it off to Toby Bennett who fired his shot past Newman.

From that point on Town were in control of the game and had numerous chances to increase the lead but failed to take their chances to put the game to bed.

The visitors were a threat on their rare breakaways and on the hour mark Blackie got ahead of Pete Fowler but his shot clipped the post and was cleared.

Thorns finally gave the scoreline a more realistic look in time added at the end of ninety minutes when Wormwell and Asher Budd linked up well, with Budd firing a low shot past the helpless Newman.

Town know they can play better than this and will hope to improve next week when they face the trip to Hanham Athletic, kick off 3pm.

Meanwhile, Thornbury Town Reserves, who were without a game this week, will entertain Taverners Reserves at the Mundys, kick off 2:30pm.
