Thornbury Town 4 Lebeq United 2

THORNBURY Town have gone to the top of the Gloucester County League after a tremendous victory over previously unbeaten leaders Lebeq United at the Mundy Playing Fields on Saturday.

Lebeq’s had taken six straight before the match between the top two in the table.

And Thornbury Town showed their intent from the start of the match and got off to a flying start and took the lead on six minutes from a Scott McLeod cross that found Craig Lancastle to turn inside his defender before driving the ball home.

Marcus Wormwell then made it 2-0 when he quickly nipped onto a soft back pass by Lebeq. Right on half-time, the visitors pulled a goal back when Rick Davis made space for himself to drive a low shot through a crowd of players into the Thornbury net.

Within five minutes of the second-half, Lebeq United were on level terms when a cross into the Thornbury box from the left was picked up by Abdirizak Hussein to slot the ball home.

The visitors were having much more of the possession but Thornbury Town stood firm and Lebeq failed to break through the stout home defence.

And the resistance was rewarded as Thornbury Town went into a lead they would not lose.

With five minutes of the game left, Lebeq’s Marcel Smith, who had come on as a substitute, picked up a second yellow card for a foul and was dismissed.

From the resulting free kick, Toby Bennett sent in a cross that skimmed across the six yard box and Pete Fowler back heeled the ball into the net.

A minute later, Lebeq gave away a penalty when Bennett was floored in the box but then got up to drive the ball home from the penalty spot.

It now means that Thornbury have gone a point ahead of Lebeq at the top of the ladder although Lebeq still have a game in hand over the new leaders.

And Thornbury now face a big clash at home to Kingswood on Saturday with the intent of cementing their place at the head of the competition.
