Wick 2nds 4 Thornbury 2nds 2

THE HOME side pressed from the start, spending the first ten minutes in the Thornbury half.

A number of shots either went wide or were well saved by Larly Staton in goal.

Sarah Brealey and Lucy Matthews were prominent for Thornbury and a well directed hit out of defence by Lauren Lever reached an unmarked Jess Wilson whose accurate pass to Megan Grigg saw the young forward score the opening goal for Thornbury against the run of play.

Wick regrouped and equalised following some good interpassing.

There was no further scoring in the first-half.

The half-time talk from manager Paul Williams saw Thornbury start on the attack and a pass from Rachel Underwood reached Holly Gardener whose powerful shot gave the home keeper no chance to regain the lead for the visitors.

Wick responded and the Thornbury defence was under intense pressure for most of the second half.

Lily Wolter, Hannah Williams and Charlie Griffiths made a number of well-timed interceptions to thwart the Wick attackers.

It was only a matter of time, however, before the equalising goal came, quickly followed by a further two to earn the home side a deserved victory.

Thornbury had the odd isolated attack to add to their total but were unable to find the net again.

Thornbury will have learnt that, when under continuous pressure it is important not to add to that pressure by hitting balls out of defence to opponents or by getting dispossessed when holding onto the ball.

Thornbury entertain Westberries fourths at Castle School on Saturday 10.30am.
