Avonmouth 1-2 Thornbury
THORNBURY won a closely contested game against Avonmouth in their first league game since the end of November.
It was an evenly matched game with lots of end to end action Thornbury had some chances in the first half; with some excellent through balls from Alex Arnold but some good goal keeping saved the home side.
There was some good communication throughout the team which meant that the visitors created some really pleasing passing exchanges involving Anna Prince, Jess Taylor and Megan Allen.
Thornbury appeared to be putting into practice moves from training which pleased coach Max Longden.
Sara Newman in goal pulled off a couple of fine saves to deny the home side in the first half which ended scoreless.
After an uplifting half time team talk , Thornbury started energetically with Molly Smith playing effectively down the right hand side of the pitch and putting in nicely weighted passes into the D.
One shot was saved by the keeper but then was followed up by Molly who put into the back of the net to give Thornbury the lead.
A well taken goal from Player of the match Alex Arnold increased the lead and Megan Mclachlan, Anna Prince, Jess Taylor and Megan Allen continued to press for further goals, linking well together but the Avonmouth defence held firm.
The Thornbury defence were very solid and Lou Lou Taylor, Carys Allen , Amy Horler were outstanding also Rosie Liddington was effective throughout especially as she was playing out of position.
Avonmouth managed to reduce the deficit but it was case of too little too late and Thornbury were able to hang on to gain a deserved victory which hopefully will continue on Saturday when Badminton visit Castle School.
Thornbury 2nd XI 3-1 Avonmouth 2nd XI
The young Thornbury side deservedly overcame visiting Avonmouth 2nds in an enjoyable morning game at Castle School.
Both sides suffered late withdrawals, Thornbury losing two players and the visitors one which meant that both sides started the game with 10.
Captain Hannah Williams set the tone for the game by winning the toss and deciding to take the push back.
Lucy Matthews and Elaine Arnold were effective in the home defence along with skipper Williams and Lauren Lever put to good use her experience to help her young team mates.
Thornbury took a deserved lead when Megan Grigg was perfectly placed to hammer home following a Daisy Davies cross.
Libby Keel .Charlie Griffiths Lily Wolter were effective in mid field for the home side and it was Wolter who scored the second goal with a well-directed effort.
Avonmouth managed to pull a goal back in the second half but Thornbury continued to press forward and following a short corner increased their lead with a powerful strike from Lauren Lever which left the keeper stranded Thornbury visit North Wilts 2nds on Saturday.
Thornbury U 14 3-1 Winscombe
Thornbury gained a deserved win against Winscombe in the Avon Junior league with goals from Amy long (2) and Jasmine Mascall.
Thornbury controlled much of the play with a number of shots going wide and when Winscombe equalised with 10 minutes left it looked as if the missed chances would prove costly but the team regrouped and registered a pleasing victory
