Thornbury took the honours in their rearranged game at Yate last Wednesday evening.

After the original match fell victim to last month’s snow, the home side dominated the early exchanges in last week’s fixture and could have scored a couple of goals through Alex Bissex.

Ex-Thornbury captain Sian Morgan was also prominent in defence for Yate. Thornbury gradually came more into the game with Anna Prince and Fizz Harper to the fore.

Captain Nicola Bruce ploughed a lone furrow up front with Megan Allen and Alex Arnold combining well in a number of attacking raids towards the home goal.

Thornbury eventually took the lead in the 23rd minute when a well-executed cross from the impressive Megan Allen found Rosie Liddington unmarked near goal and she calmly guided the ball passed the keeper.

Thornbury nearly doubled their lead shortly after but an attacking infringement ruled out captain Bruce’s effort.

Thornbury put pressure on themselves for the rest of the half by regularly finding opponents with hit outs and passes however the half time talk by coach Max Longden eradicated the errors in the 2nd half and a solid defensive display from Carys Allen, Elaine Arnold and Lou-Lou Taylor kept the home forwards under control.

The victory ensures Thornbury remain in the division next season although they still have another rearranged game against Bristol on Saturday to bring down the curtain on a season which has seen the development of a number of younger players.

Thornbury 2nds entertain Wotton under Edge 3rds at Castle School at 10.30am on Saturday.
