Football: Rocks make history

FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier League Division One West- Cheltenham Saracens 2 Tytherington Rocks 3

TYTHERINGTON Rocks made history last weekend as they won at St Peters Ground for the first time in a league match against Cheltenham Saracens.

After a goalless first half, where Marcus Taylor, Nathan Irwin, Mark Greenland and Adam Kestlake should have scored, all the goals came in the latter part of the second half.

The Rocks’ hero was debutant Olli Clarke with two late goals in a 3-2 win.

Injury victim Luke Garbacz was replaced by Danny Thompson after 36 minutes. The little striker then worked tirelessly with Taylor as their pace had the zip to foil the Saracens’ offside trap.

The Rocks went one up ten minutes after the break. Thompson opened the home defence with a dummy and Taylor was there to swivel and fire into the net.

Cheltenham were level with a lucky effort in the 64th minute. Goalkeeper Rob Dent’s kick-out went straight to midfielder Paul Ireland, who chipped the ball back over the helpless Dent.

Inside 60 seconds Tytherington went ahead again, as Thompson aimed a beautiful pass to Clarke who beat a defender to score.

Wth five minutes left Clarke was there again to net the Rocks’ third goal.

In the last minute Ross Irwin fouled Saracens’ centre forward Joe Tustain in the box. Irwin was booked and Tustain scored the penalty. Rocks had to endure five torrid minutes of injury time but they had achieved a historic victory.

Tytherington manager Barry Granger and his assistant Paul Staddon were elated and Granger said, “We deserve this win. This was our first victory here and we played some great football.”
