Ben Willshire was sent off on his debut as Almondsbury Town opened their campaign with defeat at higly fancied Paulton Town, writes David Jones.
The Almonds started brightly and their first chance fell to Marcus Mapstone whose header was cleared off the line.
Against the run of play, Paulton opened the scoring. A long punt from keeper Kyle Philips was flicked on to the feet of debutant Dane O’Connor, who cleverly chipped the ball over Almonds keeper Stuart Jones and into the net.
Paulton seemed to grow in confidence and created a couple of more chances through Chris Lane and Phil Waters but the Almonds managed to clear confidently.
Ross Stearn was causing problems down the right hand side and on one raid was fouled very close to the corner flag.
From the resulting free kick, taken by Stearn, Marvin Brown rose at the near post and flicked his header into the net .
The Almonds again started brightly at the restart as Brown fed Joe White, but his shot was put out for a corner.
Stearn floated the ball in and up popped Dale Peckham but his header went wide.
Brown went on a mazy run past two defenders but his left foot shot went straight into the keeper’s arms.
The tide turned in the 68th minute when Ben Cleverly found O’Connor, who calmly turned inside the defender and slotted home.
In the 72nd minute, Lee Marshall’s shot towards goal was adjudged to have hit Ben Willshire on the arm on the line and a penalty was awarded with the defender sent off.
Jones then saved the penalty from Lane but could not recover his parry quick enough and Lane followed up to bundle the ball home.
The Almonds didn’t give up and Matt Beadle saw a shot go just wide.
The game was wrapped up for Paulton when Ben Lacey pushed down the right to cross for Claridge for a simple tap-in.
