SUBSTITUTE Marvin Brown produced a true striker’s finish to give Almondsbury Town a dramatic late winner for the second successive game.
Mike Whittington came off the bench to score in the 88th minute in their 1-0 win over title favourites AFC Totton three days earlier and former Bristol City striker Brown repeated the dose against North Leigh.
However, even Almonds boss Richard Thompson admitted the goal was harsh on the visitors, who always looked the more threatening, but they found captain Scott Brice in fine form at the back and he made a crucial goal line clearance on 52 minutes to keep the scores level.
Almondsbury created the first chance on five minutes when Ross Stearn’s driven free kick from the left found Whittington at the far post, but he headed straight at goalkeeper Adam Lonsdale.
However, that was as good as it got for the home side in the first half as North Leigh began to take control of the game.
On 24 minutes Ben Reardon pounced on a weak header back by Marcus Mapstone but his shot from just 15 yards came back off the inside of the post and then into the grateful arms of goalkeeper Stuart Jones.
North Leigh continued to create the best chances, Reardon dragging a shot wide from just inside the area after Aaron Posey’s throw found him in space and Joe Burnell shooting just wide from 25 yards following a winding run.
Seven minutes after the restart, Alfie Saunders played a clever ball through to Ben Hutter, who squared to Reardon ten yards out, but his shot was cleared off the line by Brice.
The Almondsbury centre-back was involved at the other end on 63 minutes but his volley from close range went flying over the bar after Marcus Mapstone nodded down Ben Willshire’s long free kick.
Jason Wood was unable to keep a shot down as it bounced awkwardly in front of him 15 yards out, while at the other end Jones was called into action to make a good save with his legs after Reardon turned Mapstone on the halfway line and burst into the box.
With the game seemingly heading for a goalless draw, Mapstone won another long Willshire free kick in the box, but this time it fell to Brown, who finished smartly into the bottom corner from 15 yards.
