Adam Gould finishes fourth at Rally Northern Ireland in British Rally Championship

THORNBURY’S Adam Gould gor his Dulux Trade British Rally Championship campaign back on track with an excellent fourth overall on Rally Northern Ireland, in the TEG Sport/Pirelli Impreza N11, writes Paul Willetts.

The two-day event offered 127 competitive miles in 14 special stages in the bumpy Ulster lanes. Friday’s leg consisted of six tests.

Gould and co-driver Craig Drew made a consistent start to lie fifth after the opening loop, although they had a few power steering problems and Gould described his driving as "messy" on some stages.

In the second loop held in fading light on Friday evening, Gould damaged the suspension on a big jump on the last test dropping him back to sixth as the cars arrived back at the Antrim overnight halt.

Saturday dawned dry, but overnight rain had left the stages damp.

With the suspension repaired they soon climbed back to fifth.

They then set a string of consistent times including two third fastest times as they set about chasing McKenna for fourth, Although Gould was under instruction to finish as he was part of the TEG Sport/Pirelli team with BRC champion Keith Cronin, he soon passed McKenna’s Evo 9 for fourth, a position he held through to the finish.

Drew said: "We are happy with our pace only a second a mile behind winner Craig Breen in his Fiesta S2000 - in fact the top three are in modern machinery.

"We really struggle in the older N11 to keep up,but it was important for us to finish for TEG and Pirelli, so we’re pleased." The event was won by Craig Breen/Gareth Roberts in the Kick Energy Fiesta S2000 from Keith Cronin/Barry McNulty in the TEG/Pirelli Impreza N15.
