THERE was no dream start for new manager Sean O’Driscoll in his first game in charge of Bristol City at Elland Road on Saturday.

City went down to a second half Ross McCormack header but O’Driscoll was keen to point out the positives after the game had ended.

The new City boss said afterwards: “I’ve had three days with them and I thought they deserved a ‘well done.’” He went on: “We wanted them to be well organised, hard to beat and bright in the opposition’s half, which they were.”

Despite O’Driscoll’s encouraging words, City only mustered one shot on target and you can’t really expect to win games with that amount of endeavour going forward. Nevertheless, this wasn’t really a game City should have lost as Leeds had few decent chances. We were much better organised, all over the pitch, and defended well as a team.

Yet again we conceded from a header from a cross. Keeper Tom Heaton does like to stay on his line and this seems to make us susceptible to conceding from set pieces in particular.

We have two really big games coming up in the next week, against Ipswich (Saturday 3pm) and Watford (Tuesday 7.45pm), both to be played at Ashton Gate. Our home form has been dire this season and O’Driscoll must somehow instill some much needed confidence into the players when playing in front of the home crowd where expectation is that much higher than at away games.

Ipswich have drawn their last two games, including a decent point at league leaders Cardiff, but have not had a good season overall and languish in 19th place.

The Ipswich game is probably our best chance of three points as Watford have been flying of late. They’ve won their last two, beating Middlesbrough away before thumping Huddersfield 4-0 at Vicarage Road.

We’re seven points adrift of safety and have 19 games to play, so we need wins and we need them fast. Failure to win either of these next two games and the goal of Championship survival will look that much tougher.
