England runner Joe Dalgleish presents awards at primary school cross country event

AFTER two cancellations due to bad weather of the very popular primary school cross country event, the fourth and final race took place at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School recently.

With grey and cold weather but great running conditions, over 220 children from 23 schools attended.

England under-23 runner Joe Dalgleish, a previous junior and senior boys champion, presented the awards and also acted as a hare for the senior girls and boys races.

In the junior girls’ race, Connie Watt of Blue Coat, who was leading after three races of the season, had her work cut out to stay with British School runner Tilly Spinney and Slimbridge’s Aoife Johnson, but with a nine point lead she only had to finish in the top eight. Watt finished third, behind race winner Spinney and second-placed Johnson.

It was a proud day for the Beeston parents with their twin sons coming first and third in the junior boys’ race, Daniel being the fastest on the day and Oliver coming third. Splitting the brothers was Jamie Thornton of North Nibley. It was Wycliffe’s day in the senior girls’ race, with three runners in the top three and eight of the top 25 positions. First in was Amy Cook, followed by Evie Green and Louise Stanley.

In the senior boys, Joe McCoubrie won the final race of the season to emulate Daniel Beeston of St Joseph’s, with four wins out of four. McCoubrie, of Blue Coat School, started very fast, gaining a lead by the halfway point of 30 metres and trying to catch the hare, but it was not to be. Second in was Jack Lovell of Wycliffe – both his parents won the mums’ and dads’ race. Third was Hayden Brewer of Blue Coat. Results – Champion Small School: Kingswood.
