A MAIDEN County Championship century from Gareth Roderick and the weather rescued Gloucestershire from defeat against Kent at Canterbury.
After the visitors were reduced to 41-4 when chasing 399 to win, Roderick hit an unbeaten 152 to take them to 307-9 by the end of the third day before the final day was washed out.
The South African-born wicketkeeper received vital support from Tom Smith (32) in a 109-run seventh wicket partnership that lasted 113 minutes and Craig Miles (22), who hung in for 43 minutes in a ninth wicket stand of 42, while last man Liam Norwell (0*) survived 12 balls.
With Gloucestershire now 32 points behind second-placed Northants with four games left in Division Two, the draw keeps their promotion hopes alive, but captain Michael Klinger had hoped to close the gap with a victory as both sides attempted to engineer an exciting early finish with rain forecast on Saturday.
Ben Harmison (106) and Darren Stevens (126) scored centuries as Kent made 474 in their first innings before Klinger (31*), who passed 1,000 runs for the season, and Chris Dent (44*) saw Gloucestershire to 80-0 declared and the home side scored just 4-0 in their second innings.
Gloucestershire are in action against Somerset at Bristol today as they attempt to reach the Yorkshire Bank 40 semi-finals.
