Wickwar Wanderers withdraw first team from Stroud Football League Division Three
WICKWAR Wanderers have withdrawn their first team from Stroud and District League Division Three due to a lack of players.
However, their reserve team will continue to compete in Division Seven and have set their sights on promotion after Anthony Mattis, who represented Great Britain in the triple jump at the Athens Olympics in 2004, ran fitness sessions at the club during the summer.
He was hired to help the players get in shape by Ian Gargett, who resigned as first-team manager before the season began due to business commitments.
Mattis who still competes as a sprinter, is used to working with elite athletes in his role with the British Olympic Association and was part of the Team GB athletic support team at London 2012.
He admitted it was a bit of a shock when he first went along to training at Wickwar.
Mattis said: “To say it was shocking to start with is an understatement. Their fitness and stamina definitely improved.”
Wickwar Reserves have won their first two games of the season.
