Bristol Premier Combination round-up

MENDIP United were crowned Premier Combination champions for the fifth time in just seven years after a 4-1 defeat of Wick at the weekend.

After some midweek cancellations which saw Mendip being awarded two automatic home wins, which could actually have played against them had it come down to goal difference, they narrowly pipped AEK Boco to the title.

With a slick playing surface at Wick, Mendip capitalised on their incisive passing game when Tommy Milkins slotted home for the crucial opening goal before Wes Hawkings converted a swinging Andy Talbot cross to double United’s advantage inside the 15 minute mark.

It was 3-0 minutes after the break. Against the run of play, Ben Garland skipped down the left flank after breaking out from defence before rounding the keeper and coolly converting past a retreating Wick defence.

The home side quickly got back into the game however, a stunning Jay Hubbard strike into the top corner gifted his side faint hope but Mendip, who are awaiting the status of an application to the play in the Somerset County League next season, put the game, along with the season, to bed when Dean Maggs converted a penalty minutes before the final whistle.

Relegated to the Premier One division are DRG (Frenchay) and Bitton Reserves.
