RICHARD Peters admitted he needed to work on his tactics after failing to progress through his 1500m heat at the Commonwealth Games, writes Ryan Walters.

Former Brimsham Green pupil Peters, who is a student at Boston University in the USA, had been hopeful of making a highly-competitive final at his major championship debut at Hampden Park.

But the 24-year old faded to finish a distant ninth in a time of 3:44.10 minutes, which was nearly six seconds down on his season's best and left him well off the qualification mark.

"I put myself in the best position with 400m to go but it just wasn’t my day," he said.

"I've been training really well and a few weeks ago preparations couldn't have gone any better.

“I just don't seem to have the legs right now, it's weird and I can't explain it. I should have been able to handle that race easily, it just didn't happen for me and it's really disappointing.

"I got into position to give myself a chance at the bell but I just really struggled on that last lap, I just had to watch as they all streamed away from me.

"It's a learning experience for me and you have to look at the positives. If I’m in great shape I like that kind of race but I don't know what it is really – perhaps it’s my mind."

Peters is ranked sixth in the 1500m in the UK this year and despite struggling with Achilles tendinitis, warmed up for Glasgow by retaining his BMC Mile title in Oxford.

"The Achilles has been an issue in the last few weeks but I've been getting the best support possible from everyone at Team England. I don't want to make excuses though,” he added.

"I've got a while before I compete again and I've got some time reassess my season and what's happened here and start planning for next season."
