CHIPPING Sodbury Golf Club’s junior section are celebrating after securing a unique hat-trick of titles.

The talented squad of youngsters first made their mark in the Bristol & District Junior League, putting together an unbeaten record to qualify for the play-off semi-finals where they overcame Saltford before clinching the championship crown with a 5-1 win against Long Ashton at Knowle.

Further success followed in the foursomes Bristol & District Knock Out Cup, where Sodbury progressed to the final, trumping Bath 3-0 at The Kendleshire.

And a season to remember ended with a terrific victory in the Inter League final where Sodbury overcame North Gloucestershire winners Burghill Golf Club in a dramatic encounter at South Hereford.

The match ended all square at 3-3 leading to a play-off where Sodbury skipper Jason Blue showed tremendous character and nerves of steel to win the first extra hole and clinch the trophy.

Sodbury’s junior section organiser Jon Thompson admitted the hat-trick of successes had been “like a fairytale.”

He said: “When I took over the junior section three years ago we had only a handful of players ... now we’ve got a strong set-up with real competition for places.

“In total we have around 40 youngsters, including a group as young as five who practise on The Common.

“In the competitions, only six can play at any one time but we now have a squad of 13 players who all want to compete.

“As far as I’m aware, we’re the first club to complete the league and cup double, let alone the hat-trick so it’s a wonderful achievement for a talented squad who have all worked very hard.”

Blue, a five handicapper, now heads into the adult section but leaves the junior ranks in an extremely healthy condition and Sodbury looking to a bright future.
