Yate-based karting driver Dan Healey (17) has been picking up trophies in the Club100 Lightweight Sprint Championships.

He raced at Red Lodge circuit in Suffolk on Sunday, April 26 in the third round of the 2015 championships and despite having never raced there before, was fastest out of the 30 in his group.

Once the second group had gone out he was fourth overall in the Pre-A Final.

He came second at the end of the competition but was promoted to first place and given maximum points when the driver ahead of him was penalised for jumping the start.

His grid position for the final was based on his lap time in the Pre A-Final, which meant he took second.

Healey pushed hard and was on the leaders heals most of the race but just couldn’t get past on a narrow track that was hard to overtake on.

He finished the race in second overall and as a result got his first national trophy; a feat made even more impressive considering he’d never seen the circuit he was racing on.

Following success at Red Lodge, Healey travelled to Whilton Mill for round four last weekend.

He was quickest out of the 60 drivers and earned pole for the Pre A-Final which he led from start to finish, winning the race.

His lap time was 0.06 of a second off pole for the final so he started second on the grid.

He dropped to third for a while but fought hard to bring home a second place and another trophy.

“I was not expecting to win a trophy so early in the season, especially at a track that I have never been to before,” said Healey.

“I was unfortunate not to get the race win at Red Lodge, however, the track is so narrow it is very difficult to overtake without ruining your position and possibly taking out another competitor.

“Unfortunately my true position in the standings is currently not showing, due to missing out on the first round in February.

“Once the drop rounds start in the summer I will have a true representation of where I currently stand, which I believe to be top three.

“If I can keep the consistency up, gaining good points at each round, then I am hoping to achieve a high result at the end of the year.

“To win back to back trophies is an amazing achievement in only my second year at this level; my first year was spent learning the new circuits.

“However, this year I have also had to learn new circuits, something I have really enjoyed.

“At the end of the season a number of Lightweight Sprint competitors will be promoted to the next level which is the Clubman tier, something I now feel that I am ready to progress to and will relish the chance next year of tougher competition and gaining more experience.”
