SMITHS came out on top to beat the Shredded Ducks to win the first Sodbury Sevens tournament held at Chipping Sodbury RFC last weekend.
After a stressful run up for organiser James Bennett, the day ran smoothly and proved to be a huge success, which is a fantastic starting point for what the club hope will be a bigger and better annual event for years to come.
Some 12 senior men’s teams from as far as Cardiff and Plymouth entered to form a three-group pool stage, with four teams in each pool competing in a total of three games each across two pitches to reach the Cup, Plate, Bowl or Spoon semi final.
A whole range of entries attended the day, from mixed competitive teams, local sides looking for a run out and further afield clubs coming make a weekend of it — the event had a fun, relaxed atmosphere and apart from a short shower the weather held out in order for everyone to enjoy picnics, the BBQ and drinks from the bar tent.
Hosts Sodbury Otters narrowly lost out to the Smiths 12-17 in the Cup semi final.
Smiths went on to win the tournament in a riveting final against Shredded Ducks 19-17, whileAvon 7’s beat Frampton only to lose to Cardiff 33-7 in the Plate final.
Sodbury-based SG23 beat Old Cryptians 31-0 in the Bowl semi final only to be on the receiving end losing against Avonmouth 37-0 in the final and Bath team Walcot Old Boys went through to win the Spoon against the travelling UPRFC.
Presentations were carried out in the clubhouse and teams handed their well-earned awards before the after party got into full swing starting with band Angel Heart performing for the evening and a DJ closing the night’s festivities.
