Gloucester Premier
Chipping Sodbury 35
St Mary’s Old Boys 8

TENSION seemed to afflict both sides in the early exchanges of this League and Cup double-header, and the game stuttered along through a series of scrums, lineouts and penalties.
Happily for Sodbury, they secured a fourth win in the Gloucester Premier League, remain unbeaten and are now second behind Bristol Saracens.
Sodbury were right off the mark in the first minutes from a Dan Bradley penalty.
The score crept to 6–3 to Sodbury and their defence was resolute and robust across the field.
St Mary’s coughed up a penalty, which allowed Bradley to extend the lead to six points.
Sodbury suffered a little confusion at the restart which led to some pressure.
It was late in the half when Sodbury eventually managed to string together five phases of play and forced one last penalty which was missed but seemed to bode well, as the hosts were finally finding their rhythm.
The second half saw Sodbury playing on the front foot, with Joe Horton probing dangerously along with Phil Player and Dom Pullen.
Sodbury’s first try of the game came off the back of 10 phases of play after a stunning kick chase by Jake Lewis and Max Gallagher.
When Gallagher finally received the crucial pass, he burst on to it and set off to score wide on the right.
Five minutes later, skipper Steve Hopes took the brave decision to kick to the corner from an easily kickable spot.
The resulting lineout was seven metres from St Mary’s line and Sodbury sent up Matt Cooke for the catch and drive.
With the best of Sodbury’s pack churning up the turf, Sumo claimed the ball and simply dived over as the line came into view.
Five minutes later, Sodbury scored via Pullen, but St Mary’s countered with a try.
Some loose passing led to the ball hitting the turf with Ben Taylor on hand for the fourth try of the second half and a simple conversion for Bradley that gave Sodbury a bonus point and secured a comfortable win.
All Sodbury teams remain unbeaten in all competitions this season.
