ALEC Fiddes cannot stop scoring after he grabbed an amazing five goals in two games this week.
The Yate Town winger hammered home four of his side’s goals as they put together an accomplished performance to upset Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West rivals Swindon Supermarine by 5-2 on Saturday.
And Fiddes followed that by putting the ball into the back of the Shortwood United net on Tuesday night as Yate battled in vain to win back-to-back matches, losing out 3-2.
Saturday was the afternoon when Fiddes, who is in his first season at the club, had a match that he could only have dreamed about.
He said: “Every time I shot, the ball went into the net.”
Despite Tuesday’s defeat, the victory over Supermarine, who were third in the table before the match, represented something of a milestone for Yate.
Fiddes said: “It was a big three points. They are a top side and doing well. That win put us back on track in the league again.
“We knew it would be a tough game and I know we haven’t had the best of starts to the season but we are confident and it finally came together in that match.
“Now we can go into other games thinking we can win and hoping we can go on from that.”
The 21-year-old played under Yate manager Craig Laird at Weymouth last season and was on the books of both Bristol City and Exeter City as a youngster.
But he has never made such an impact in one match at senior level as he did against Swindon Supermarine.
Fiddes said: “I think I have done it (scored four) before in youth team football but I have never scored a hat-trick (in senior football) before.
“I am a winger and my primary job is not to get goals – but it was great all the same.”
Striker Darren Edwards added a fifth on Saturday and, as Laird hopes other players will score to take the pressure off the front duo of Edwards and Jake Jackson, the latter getting the second of the night.
Laird believes there is still more to come from Fiddes, saying: “He’s the first into training and the last out but I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet.”
The Bluebells have a weekend off before travelling to Banbury United to put right the defeat against Shortwood.
But Yate may have to go into that match without the services of midfielder Harry Horton, who has joined Mitch Tippins on the injury list.
Horton damaged his right ankle in a challenge on Tuesday and has his leg in plaster. His injury is due to be assessed next week.
Laird said: “It’s a real shame for Harry because he is making a big difference in midfield.”
He also said he and the players wanted to thank the fans, especially those who travelled to Shortwood on Tuesday.
“They travelled on a horrible night. The players have a responsibility to them through thick and thin.”
