YATE’S Dan Healey said he was left relieved but delighted to be crowned champion of Karting’s Lightweight Club 100 Championships this year after another excellent round saw him lift the trophy.

Healey secured five wins out of eight in the last four rounds of action – two races each round – but, on the last weekend of competition, he finished in disappointing fashion.

He qualified fourth in the first race, while his main rival qualified 12th.

Healey thought that was it but, in the first heat, he was shoved on to grass and dropped down to 13th in the race.

It all came down to the final race. Healey drove his kart amazingly and finished eighth with the fastest lap. His rival won the race so got maximum points So it came down to the narrowest of margins to see who had won and, after a wait, Healey took the title by just four points.

He said: “I am relieved. My first race was horrible but due to my bad car, I qualified far back for the second race.

“I drove my heart out and finished eighth. I had no idea what the result was until someone came over to me with the leaderboard. It was a bit too close for my liking.”

And he is not about to give the competition up yet as he wants to return to defend his title in 2016.

“I want come back into Lightweight Club 100 next year. It is a lot of fun and I want to see what I can do against the big boys. I have not tested myself against them yet. It is going to be interesting.”
