Wantage Town 0 Yate Town 4

YATE Town bounced back from last Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Tiverton Town in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West to smash Wantage Town and, in doing so, put themselves into 11th place after AFC Totton’s clash on Tuesday was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Bluebells succumbed to a 4-0 defeat at Tiverton on Saturday which ended a two-match run of victories.

However, manager Craig Laird’s squad fought back at Wantage, who are at the wrong end of the table, and dominated the clash.

Strike ace Darren Edwards got the ball rolling with a fine goal on six minutes from a free-kick where he headed the ball into the opposition net.

That set Yate on their way, and the lead was doubled ten minutes before the interval when a goalmouth scramble saw Harry Horton touch the ball into the net.

Wantage, who have won just nine times this season, the last of those coming away at Marlow at the end of January, had a mountain to climb but Yate were able to control matters as the second-half got underway.

And, on 53 minutes, the game was all but put out of Wantage’s reach as Mike Bryant finished off some excellent inter-passing from the Bluebells to volley the ball into the net.

Ten minutes later, Edwards wrapped things up completely with his second of the match when he found himself unmarked in the home danger area and chipped the Wantage keeper to score.
