A VILLAGE cricket club has been coaching young stars of the future at three local primary schools.

Coalpit Heath Cricket Club is holding regular coaching sessions at Abbotswood Primary School in Yate, Watermore Primary School in Frampton Cotterell and The Manor School in Coalpit Heath as it tries to increase membership and inspire new players.

The weekly training sessions, which are open to boys and girls, are being run by county coaches and will benefit between 180 and 190 children with two classes of 30 pupils at each school.

Richard Foley, president of the cricket club, said: “We started last week for six weeks and although this is the third year we have organised the coaching as a club, this is the first time we have a presence in Yate and we have never publicised what we are doing.

“We want to encourage people to use and play for the club and hope to see more players on a regular basis.”

The sessions culminate in a weekly barbecue for children and their families at the cricket club on Serridge Lane.
