Yate Town 3 Bridgwater Town 2

YATE TOWN have won their first Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West match of the season in a five-goal basement thriller with Bridgwater Town.

Neither side had won a league game before kick-off but Yate have taken the points but they had to survive a fightback by the opposition, who are managed by former Bluebells boss Craig Laird.

The significance of the victory for Yate manager Paul Britton and his squad is that, in one leap, they have gone from bottom of the table to out of the relegation zone and into 18th of the 22-team league.

Jack Ball hit two goals early on after striking after six minutes and then thumping a volley into the Bridgwater goal as Yate went 2-0 up within 11 minutes of kick-off.

Bridgwater, however, fought back and snatched the first of their goals after 38 minutes as the Bluebells went into the break 2-1 ahead.

And it was all square with 15 minutes of the match remaining as Bridgwater equalised.

However, Yate would not be beaten and Kyle Thomas thumped a free kick past the Bridgwater keeper just three minutes after the opposition levelled, and Yate held out to leave the club beaming as they head towards an away clash with Wantage Town next Saturday.

And that match against Wantage is one that Britton and his squad will be targeting as Wantage have not won this season and are two places below Yate now.
